In 1965, Jagtar joined Punjabi Agricultural University where he completed a BSc in Agriculture and a Masters in Agriculture journalism, which satisfied his appetite for literature and writing. Following the completion of his Masters he worked at the University in the Department of Agriculture Journalism. During this time he wrote some of his best poetry. Poetry, writing, music, and public speaking have been his life long passions. During his time at the Punjab Agricultural University, Jagtar made many memories with a very diverse group of friends. He was loved by his friends for his hilarious sense of humor and laid back personality. Despite his religious devotion and lifelong aversion to any substances, he was able to have a great time with any company he found himself in, as many of his party loving friends in the early 1970's would attest to.
